For most women, motherhood is a source of great excitement and joy, but for about one in six, it is a time fraught with anxiety and depression.
These mental health challenges can strike hardest at the most vulnerable – single moms, those with limited financial means, and those from minority groups – but all women are at risk. They can leave mothers unable to look after their children, cause behavioural and learning disorders in children, and otherwise disrupt the whole family.
Dr. Angela Bowen is evaluating the effectiveness of the newly-created Maternal Mental Health Program (MMHP). Located at the West Winds Primary Health Centre in Saskatoon, it offers access to professional mental health care practitioners, all in one location. The MMHP may suggest a model for effective mental health care for mothers and their families in Saskatchewan and across the country.
