Safe, effective contraception and assisted reproduction techniques allow couples more freedom in choosing when and how to create their families. At the same time, with an aging baby boom comes an urgent need to understand effects of age-related hormone changes.
The Reproductive Science and Medicine Group works to understand human reproductive systems. Their world-leading research has profound implications for contraception and fertility treatments as well as various disorders. Group members develop animal models that can be used to shed light on questions of human reproduction. Others work on advanced imaging techniques using precision ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and synchrotron light.
Humanities researchers in the group explore the importance of reproduction as a social issue, including its impact on psychology and depiction in literature and history. The aim is to shed light on how the issue has shaped societies in the past, and in so doing, help predict future challenges.
