Grant Objectives

This page maintains a record of the objectives for all SHRF Grants that have active projects. It is to be used as a reference for reporting purposes.

Establishment Grant

Purpose: SHRF’s Establishment Grant strengthens the capabilities of Saskatchewan’s health research ecosystem to address the province’s health needs, now and in the future.
SHRF provides competitive, peer-reviewed research funding to early career researchers who are building the foundations of impactful programs of health research in the province.

Objectives: Funding assists researchers who are within the first five years of their qualifying appointment to:
•    establish autonomous programs of health research addressing Saskatchewan needs, and
•    achieve the research productivity necessary for obtaining major funding from national and other external agencies.

Align Grant

Purpose: The SHRF Connections Program provides short-term, streamlined funding with an overall goal of shaping research to align with real-world needs and embedding knowledge translation in the research process.
The Align Grant is designed to support projects and activities that will align research in Saskatchewan with real needs and position teams for impact including securing future funding, strengthening collaboration, implementing improvements in health, providing training opportunities and creating capacity for the province.

Objectives: The objective of the Align Grant is to support new opportunities for research funding and real-world impacts in Saskatchewan. Align Grants provide funding for teams to complete activities that will aid them in building momentum for novel ideas, approaches, collaborations and perspectives in order to successfully pursue their identified future research funding.

Mobilize Grant

Purpose: The SHRF Connections Program provides short-term, streamlined funding with an overall goal of shaping research to align with real-world needs and embedding knowledge translation in the research process.
The purpose of the SHRF Mobilize Grant is to fund knowledge mobilization activities in relevant and practical settings and mediums, with the aim of improving the applicability and impact of health research in Saskatchewan.

Objectives: Proposed activities must fulfill the purpose of knowledge mobilization by addressing at least one of the following objectives:
•    Facilitate the use and integration of health research knowledge and evidence into practice and decision making.
•    Facilitate the use of relevant knowledge (e.g., lived experiences, traditional knowledge) to inform and guide research activities.
•    Facilitate the participation of non-academic team members in the research and knowledge sharing process.

Solutions - Innovation Grant

Purpose: SHRF’s Solutions Program brings together diverse expertise and perspectives to address complex, timely health challenges and advance innovative solutions that generate lasting impact for a stronger, healthier Saskatchewan.

Objectives: Catalyzing new ideas and approaches to support innovative solutions that respond to focus area needs.

Solutions - Impact Grant

Purpose: SHRF’s Solutions Program brings together diverse expertise and perspectives to address complex, timely health challenges and advance innovative solutions that generate lasting impact for a stronger, healthier Saskatchewan.

Objectives: Advancing the translation of innovative solutions, supported by preliminary data, into real-world and practical applications that respond to focus area needs.

Sprout Grant

Purpose: The Sprout grant program cultivates patient-oriented research in Saskatchewan and furthers the work of SCPOR to build capacity and collaborations to conduct responsive, equitable, innovative and patient-oriented research that continuously improves the care and health of Saskatchewan people.

Objectives:

1.    To fund patient-oriented research projects that will create new knowledge that has the potential to improve patient care and the health system in Saskatchewan.
2.    To increase collaboration between academic researchers of different disciplines, patients and caregivers, community-based researchers, health care practitioners and health system decision-makers in Saskatchewan.
3.    To support emerging research having a sound justification and rationale which has the potential to improve patient care and the health system in Saskatchewan in the foreseeable future.
4.    Increase chances for further funding to support next steps, including further investigation, scale-up and implementation.

Collaborative Innovation Development (CID) Grant

Purpose: The Collaborative Innovation Development (CID) grant program provides seed money to support collaborative, interdisciplinary and innovative research activities representing first steps toward the pursuit of more comprehensive funding. Funding provided by SHRF is intended to foster creativity, novelty and innovation in original research that has potential to benefit the health of Saskatchewan residents and strengthen future funding applications. Proposed projects are supported by a sound rationale and feasible research plan, but not necessarily preliminary data.

Objectives: The CID grant program aims to support:
1. Collaborative, interdisciplinary research activities, including activities between researchers and knowledge users outside the academic community.
2. Innovative research with the potential to benefit the health of Saskatchewan people, including:
a. the development of novel research questions;
b. the use or development of novel approaches or methodologies, including knowledge mobilization methodologies; and
c. the application of existing methods or concepts to novel research questions, in new ways or in new settings.
3. Scalable research projects (e.g., pilot, feasibility, translational studies) positioning teams for success in obtaining larger, more substantial funding from sources other than SHRF within three years following the initiation of SHRF funding.
