Terry Fox Postdoctoral Fellow
The Terry Fox Institute and SHRF share a common objecive to support research with the potential to improve understanding of cancer, its prevention, early detection, and cure. The goal of this fellowship is to build capacity in cancer research in our province.
Crohn's and Colitis Postdoctoral Fellow
The Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada and SHRF share a common objective to support research with the potential to improve understanding of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), its prevention, early detection and cure. IBD is a chronic illness that affects a disproportionately high numbe of people in Saskatchewan. This fellowship will help increase research capacity in this important area.
Partnership for Health System Improvement (with CIHR)
The Partnerships for Health System Improvement (PHSI) Program designed to support teams of researchers and decision-makers interested in conducting applied health services research useful to health system managers and or policy makers over the next two to five years. SHRF's role is to encourage more applications in Saskatchewan, manage the provincial matching funds, and participate in the required relevance review.
Regional Partnership Program (with CIHR)
The Saskatchewan – CIHR Regional Partnership Program (Sask-CIHR RPP) is intended to increase the level of nationally funded health research in Saskatchewan. SHRF manages these funds with its university and government partners through a provincial advisory committee. SHRF's agreement with CIHR to participate in RPP has recently been renewed and extends to the spring 2012 competition.
Researchers apply directly to CIHR, which does the peer review and ranks the applications. Researchers with very good scores that are just below CIHR’s high funding cut-offs are funded on 1:1 matching basis.
The last competitions to be funded by the existing Sask‐CIHR RPP program are as follows:
• Fellowship Award ‐ February 1, 2012
• Operating Grant – March 1, 2012
CIHR is developing a new model for all of its Partnership Programs, which should be announced later this year.

Quality Improvement Chair
A Memorandum of Understanding was completed and signed with the U. of S., Health Quality Council (HQC), and the Workforce Planning Branch of the Ministry of Health and the University has begun the recruitment process for this chair. SHRF’s role is to manage the HQC and Ministry funds and apply our grants management process to the award.
Saskatchewan Research Chair in Alzheimer Disease and Related Dementia
This chair was formed with the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan. The emphasis of the award is on understanding the possible causes, which will lead to earlier and more accurate diagnoses, more effective treatments, and, ultimately, a cure. Dr. Darrell Mousseau, a professor of psychiatry in the College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan was awarded this chair in 2010.
Saskatchewan Research Chair in MS Clinical Research
The Chair will be supported by the Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation, the College of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan, and SHRF. The position will focus on clinical research to identify causes of multiple sclerosis (MS), develop new or improved treatments and therapies, and ultimately find a cure for MS. The U of S will provide the necessary infrastructure support for the Chair in a permanent tenure track faculty position with its College of Medicine currently leading a search for a leading-edge clinician-scientist to fill this position.
Saskatchewan Research Chair in Heart Disease and Stroke
In 2010, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan and SHRF entered into an agreement to co-fund this Chair to build on demonstrated or emerging research strengths that are important and relevant to the mission of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Research may be in any "pillar" of health research – biomedical sciences, clinical research, health systems and policy research, or research into the social, cultural, environmental determinants of population health. The University of Saskatchewan was selected at the LOI stage to recruit. The chair is expected to be filled in 2012.

National Alliance of Provincial Health Research Organizations (NAPHRO)
NAPHRO is a group of provincial health research funding agencies created in 2003 to promote increased dialogue, linkages and partnership activities. Alliance members meet on a regular basis to share information and identify potential opportunities for working collaboratively on common issues.
Examples of common interests members share include:
- Increased knowledge of peer agency programs and activities
- Identifying opportunities for collaboration (e.g. platform technologies, clinical research support initiatives)
- Evaluating the impact of health research
- Implementing a nation-wide Common Curriculum Vitae (CCV) and a Interprovincial Directory of Researchers; and
- Health research leadership and management development.

Consortia Advancing Standards in Research Administration Information (CASRAI)
SHRF became a member of CASRAI in 2010 and participate on various CASRAI committees. CASRAI is an independent, not-for-profit organization that develops, maintains, and promotes standards for research administration data. CASRAI believes that standards development is a shared initiative and invites participation from all areas of research administration.
All stakeholders benefit from a common set of semantic and format standards for the exchange and management of research administration data. Over time, this will:
- Help researchers save time and maintain a single data source;
- Help institutions and funders gain flexibility and better data quality; and
- Ensure that all stakeholders are free to use
More information about CASRAI and its activities are available on its website.
