People with traumatic spinal cord injury often face health complications that, if not prevented or treated early, can lead to significant illness or death. In addition to these unique health difficulties, they also must overcome the diverse challenges to their health and well being that are associated with living in the community. Dr. Garry Linassi is evaluating the potential for a provincial outreach program that will ensure a continuum of care for people with traumatic spinal cord injury after their transition into the community.
As a first step towards achieving his vision, Dr. Linassi is identifying the needs of Saskatchewan people who have traumatic spinal cord injury and have returned to their communities. At the same time, he is collecting data pertaining to their demands on health services and perceived barriers to service access. Information is being obtained from Saskatchewan Health, an ongoing national survey that includes Saskatchewan-specific data, and interviews with patients, health care providers and health care administrators from urban, rural and northern communities In Saskatchewan.
By implementing a provincial outreach program to facilitate a continuum of care during and after transition into the community, Dr. Linassi hopes to improve quality of life for people who suffer from traumatic spinal cord injury.
