Nanotechnology, the study of manipulating matter on an atomic and molecular scale, may create many new materials and devices with a vast range of applications in medicine.

Dr. Wenjun Zhang and his group are investigating existing nanosystems and developing new systems for three general activities: drug therapy delivery, diagnostic tests and mechanical physical therapy delivery. Integration of these three activities manifests the future of minimally invasive and site-specific medical technology. The proposed research for the group will advance understanding of the basic science of the interaction between a micro-nano-object and a biological system either at the cell-tissue or organ level. Knowledge of these interactions is fundamental to improving the accuracy of diagnostic tests and the efficacy of drugs or procedures.

The proposed research has great potential to improve clinical practice, as there are many diseases such as cancers and chronic infections that have a need for micro or nano devices to deliver drugs and procedures.
