Chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and neuropsychiatric illnesses are leading causes of death and disability in Canada. Costs to our health care system and to our personal quality of life prioritize a need for more effective and sustainable strategies of treatment and prevention.
The Drug Design and Discovery Research Group is setting out to identify active components in plants that positively alter common risk factors of chronic disease. The group is focusing their investigations on bioactive compounds found in prominent Saskatchewan agricultural products such as flaxseed and pulse crops. Other goals of the group include fostering a unique training environment, establishing a clear framework for group synergy, building upon existing partnerships and new collaborations in plant bioactive research, and forging strong relationships with key stakeholders.
Findings from the research will contribute to the identification of determinants of health status and the prevention or treatment of underlying causes of chronic disease. A value-added benefit will be any boost to the local agricultural economy.
