Dr. Carolyn Brooks believes there is insufficient research to understand psychological, social, cultural and environmental factors, including health systems barriers and strengths, related to intimate partner violence (IPV) committed by women in urban, rural and First Nations communities in Saskatchewan.
Dr. Brooks is conducting research with the objectives to: 1) identify existing health-related literature, supports and programs; 2) document the experiences of women who have used violence and men who have experienced IPV by an intimate partner; 3) identify health needs, barriers and pathways to healing; and 4) translate the knowledge gained using the direct input of participants and community stakeholders.
This overall program of research will contribute to an understanding of the complex dynamics of IPV, informing policies, practices and knowledge dissemination. Through identifying health needs and experiential accounts, it will also have implications towards health systems and policy. In addition, the emphasis on learning from First Nations voices will provide an increased understanding of the needs of Aboriginal peoples, towards a foundation for informing culturally responsive intervention and prevention measures.
