Participatory theatre has been used as a research tool to examine a variety of social problems. Volunteer study participants develop realistic situations based on their personal experiences. Dr. Elizabeth Quinlan is studying workplace bullying experienced by Continuing Care Assistants (CCAs) in Saskatchewan’s long-term care homes. CCAs drawn from four rural and urban long-term care homes will use participatory theatre workshops to shed light on the problem of bullying and explore possible solutions. Participants, who have little to no theatre training, will develop bullying scenarios drawn from their everyday life experiences as caregivers in a series of workshops. The scenarios will then be performed in the workplace setting to a larger group of CCAs in order to work together on possible solutions. It is hoped such solutions to address workplace bullying will contribute to improved retention and aid recruitment of health care workers.
