Providing care for a dying spouse is one of the most difficult – and in some ways the most fulfilling – tasks we may encounter in a lifetime. For many people, the hardest part of all is coping with feelings of grief and loss of focus once the caregiving ends. Dr. Lorraine Holtslander is working to develop and pilot test a “Finding Balance” writing tool for older adults bereaved after caregiving for a spouse with advanced cancer. These people frequently experience a lack of support and other difficulties. Dr. Holtslander is developing this writing tool based on interviews and diaries collected from bereaved caregivers, with input from bereavement experts. The final phase of the project will see the newly-developed tool tested among forty participants. The hope is that this tool can provide an innovative way for a unique and often neglected population to help themselves.
