Although the lifestyles of rural and urban Canadians are very different, there is currently little information on how the mental health of rural Canadians compares to urban Canadians. Dr. Changgui Kou will be looking to Statistics Canada datasets to help understand what determines mental health status in both rural and urban areas of Canada. This information will be accessed through the Saskatchewan Research Data Centre (SKY-RDC), a facility that offers access to Statistics Canada surveys and census data in a secure environment at the University of Saskatchewan. Rural and urban trends from the last two decades will be tracked to understand the rates of depression in both areas. This study will provide information on the need and use of mental health resources in rural areas, which will inform development of rural mental health policies.
