Whenever we breathe, we take in everything from pollen and workplace dust to cigarette smoke, viruses, and bacteria. The hazards of just breathing vary depending on who you are and what you do. Grain and barn dust are hazards for our rural communities, while pollution from industry and other sources plague our cities. Rising rates of asthma, which now affects about one in five young people, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the elderly, are also concerns. Obesity, much on the rise in North America, is linked to breathing disorders such as asthma and sleep apnea.
To tackle these diverse challenges, the Airways Research Group draws upon expertise from several departments within the U of S Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Western College of Veterinary Medicine in collaboration with the U of S School of Public Health and the Saskatchewan Lung Association. Together, they will work to produce practical information for health care professionals, as well as knowledge to inform government policy on issues such as industrial development, air quality, and public health.
