Aboriginal populations are undergoing a health transition. Chronic diseases, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, are now a greater issue than infectious diseases. This project, with the Sturgeon Lake First Nation, is intended to raise awareness of chronic diseases and increase knowledge of the value of healthy lifestyle choices. The project takes an integrated approach to prevention and management by promoting self care, family care and community care, including the development of public policy to build an environment where healthy choices are readily available. This project will be informed by community-based participatory methods and transformative action research. With this approach, Dr. Ramsden will engage individuals with diabetes and high blood pressure, their families, health care practitioners and the community in developing an innovative prevention and management program resulting in pathways for wellness.
