Social service community-based organizations (CBOs) work on the front lines with marginalized, excluded populations – communities where unhealthy social conditions are common. Because of their experiential knowledge, CBOs can play an important role as advocates in suggesting public policies that promote the development of healthy individuals and communities. This research project will explore the policy advocacy role of CBOs, using interviews and focus groups with advocacy coalitions, marginalized communities, governments and CBOs themselves. The research is needed because there is little data regarding the impact of engagement processes’ on population health, and because of the growing interest in measuring the health and social effects of the CBO sector.
