As we age, many cognitive abilities can start to decline. One such decline occurs in our processing of spatial information, which plays a role in how we navigate our physical environment. Christiane Wilzeck is studying the mechanisms behind this decline, using birds to determine the relationship between aging, gender and how the brain processes information about landmarks and distance. Because birds virtually possess “split brains” – having a distinct left and right hemisphere – it is possible to study each of their hemispheres independently in a non-invasive way. This research will contribute to an understanding of how aging can affect the ability to navigate and locate important places in our environment.
