Most severe respiratory infections in infants and young children are caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), with 64 million cases reported each year and approximately 160,000 deaths. There is no treatment or vaccine available for this disease. Researchers have concluded that the magnitude and type of immune response are critical in providing protection from RSV. To develop a vaccine, Sheryl Maher is looking at how cells of the immune system respond to vaccine components. The adjuvants identified in this study can then be used to speed the development of vaccines for other diseases.
