Campylobacter infections are a major source of gastrointestinal disease in humans. Most research has focused on livestock sources of C. jejuni and C. coli that find their way into food and water sources. Yet, there is evidence that other species of Campylobacter – such as those found in domestic pets – also cause significant disease in humans. Dr. Bonnie Chaban is working to develop DNA-based diagnostic tools that will address the current lack of methods for detecting, identifying and quantifying individual Campylobacter species. She will apply these methods to characterize the microbial populations found in companion animals. Dr. Chaban’s work will increase our diagnostic capabilities and our understanding of Campylobacter species that cause disease in humans and animals.
