In Canada, many of the people most in need of timely dental care face economic, geographic, or physical barriers to accessing services. Eighty per cent of oral disease is concentrated within 20 per cent of the population – specifically the poor, First Nations people, the elderly, the physically or mentally challenged, and those living in rural or remote communities. Dr. Gerry Uswak will map the inequity in distribution of dental services across Saskatchewan. Then he will compare location of dental services and prevalence of oral disease among school-age children in Saskatoon Health Region, which has both rural and inner city populations. Dr. Uswak's findings should guide more equitable and effective use of existing health human resources and help ensure any new dental services are added where need is greatest.
