Saskatchewan men and women lose more potential years of life to unintentional injury than people anywhere else in Canada. Each year, over 30,000 workers in this province file claims for work-related injuries and illness. To date, however, little has been done to use these data for monitoring injury rates and preventing injuries. Dr. Syed Shah is looking at whether data collected by the Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) can be used to track injuries among health care workers. Specifically, Dr. Shah is trying to determine whether the rate of claims for severe work-related musculoskeletal injuries in our health care system fell as quickly as it did in Manitoba and Washington State between 1996 and 2005. His work has the potential to inform development of effective injury surveillance and prevention programs.
