Mental health, mental illness, and addictions are health issues with enormous costs for society, with our Aboriginal communities shouldering a particularly heavy burden. Treatment strategies are still evolving, and there are gaps in knowledge. For example, little research has been done on the effectiveness of culturally-informed treatment strategies for Aboriginal people within Western health models, and little work has been done on gender-specific support for Aboriginal women.
Drawing on expertise in educational psychology, psychiatry, sociology, and family medicine, and in partnership with local community-based expertise, STREAM works to identify gaps and opportunities in our knowledge of addictions and mental health, with a focus on culturally appropriate treatment services for Aboriginal people.
