Dendritic cells (DCs) are antigen presenting cells that are an important part of our immune system. DCs have commonly been used for cancer vaccines, but have been less effective in destroying well-established cancerous tumors. Ye, with the help of her Research Fellowship grant, will conduct various tests over the next two years hoping to improve the effectiveness of DCs. Ye chose to study this type of immunotherapy since cancer rates are especially high among Saskatchewan’s senior population. By conducting various immunotherapies on lab mice afflicted with cancer cells Ye anticipates that a novel immunotherapy protocol can be developed. Ye hopes that this protocol can eventually be applied to the treatment of solid tumors in humans treating myeloma, breast cancer, head and neck tumors.
