Current family physician shortages in Saskatchewan are predicted to worsen due to retirement, relocation and issues associated with job satisfaction. This research project will attempt to curb that tide by making family medicine more attractive to medical students through a mentoring program. Mentoring programs are already established in other professions, but there are few, if any, that exist in family medicine. The research will involve an environmental scan of mentor programs in use, the development of a mentorship model with family medicine practitioners in primary health care settings, and, eventually, a test of the model developed through the creation of a national research team. The overall goal of the research project is to retain physicians trained in Saskatchewan to practice in the province as family physicians.
Thomas-MacLean’s research aligns well with Saskatchewan’s Health Research Strategy by focusing on health systems and policy research.
