Falls account for 85% of all injuries requiring hospitalization among Canada’s older adults. Even more startling is the fact that falls among those with dementia can lead to very serious health problems and even death. The key to designing a fall screening and prevention program is to identify risk factors within this population, especially those factors that can be changed. Working with select Saskatchewan seniors who have early cognitive problems and still live at home, this research will seek to determine the causes of falls and near-falls, what risk factors play the biggest role in these incidents, and explore any links between different types of dementia and fall and near-fall risk factors.
Dal Bello-Haas’ research aligns well with Saskatchewan’s Health Research Strategy by focusing on the health needs of seniors, a specific population group identified in the Strategy.
