To date, very little research has been conducted into the health and well-being of Aboriginal grandmothers in Canada. This is of particular concern to Saskatchewan’s Aboriginal community since many grandmothers are increasingly being called upon to raise their grandchildren. Using a Strategic Priorities grant Kubik and her co-investigators will network with other researchers from across the country to explore possible methods and activities that will keep Aboriginal grandmothers healthy. It is anticipated that the research will lead to some significant findings that can be translated into improved health services for Aboriginal grandmothers living in Saskatchewan. Grandmothers caring for their grandchildren will learn what they can do to enhance their well-being and that of their grandchildren. Aboriginal youth will also benefit from this research project. Grandchildren will have more opportunities to learn about their culture and experience the translation of knowledge from the grandmothers and elders involved in the study.
This research aligns well with Saskatchewan’s Health Research Strategy. It focuses on the health needs of specific populations, with emphasis on Aboriginal people and seniors, a priority area within the Strategy.
