Dr. Köster’s research of salmonellosis, caused by food-poisoning strains of Salmonella, could possibly lead to a reduction of its occurrence. The handling of uncooked and consumption of undercooked meat have been identified as significant risk factors in the transmission of Salmonella to humans. Birds, including poultry used for food production, represent an important host of various Salmonella strains that are known to cause gastrointestinal diseases, some of which require hospitalization and treatment. The objective of this study is to investigate why strains of Salmonella, that have been isolated from poultry, can survive and multiply in chickens. Results obtained from Dr. Köster’s research will provide a foundation for a vaccination program that may reduce salmonellosis levels throughout the country.
