Zhang’s research will investigate the effects of the antipsychotic drugs (APDs), clozapine and quetipine, on Oligodendrocytes (OLGs). OLGs produce myelin, a substance that surrounds and insulates axons in the brain and are highly sensitive to oxidative, toxic and inflammatory damage. Recent studies suggest that this type of damage is involved in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. Although clozapine and quetipine are commonly used to treat patients with schizophrenia, more research is still required to understand the full effects of these drugs. Zhang’s research, via conducting comparative tests on mice, will illustrate any behavioural, cellular or molecular changes that may occur as a result of these drugs.
