Even though it has been proven that exercise results in numerous health benefits, research suggests that approximately 24% of Saskatchewan’s youth are not sufficiently active. Furthermore, a dramatic decline in physical activity occurs when individuals move from a high school environment into university. This research project, through two phases, will attempt to identify barriers to physical activity and design a physical activity plus education program to reduce those barriers, through active coping, among first-year university students. The research represents a first step toward addressing the problem of the dramatic decline in physical activity among students entering university. It is anticipated that the long lasting effects of the research will lead to further health benefits for students who have reached a key lifetime transition phase.
