Obesity has been recognized by the World Health Organization as a worldwide epidemic requiring immediate attention. In Canada there has been a doubling of adult obesity rates, and a tripling of childhood obesity rates in the past 20 years. The Research Group on Obesity will study obesity's effect on youth, family units and communities. The group hopes to promote a holistic multi-dimensional approach to the study of obesity; to pass results of their work on to Canadian and international communities; provide opportunities for high-quality training of student researchers and community agency personnel, and cultivate relationships in Aboriginal communities to address prominent health issues. They also want to make the University of Saskatchewan a recognized world leader in aboriginal health care.
