A disproportionate number of gay men and lesbian women report having been victimized due to their sexual orientation, with crimes ranging in severity from verbal threats to physical assaults. For those not victimized, the ever-present threat that it could happen poses a significant psychological burden, one that may, in turn, lead to tobacco/substance use, sexual risk-taking, and suicide attempts. Little research has been conducted to better understand the association between victimization and health. Working with a newly-formed national community-based group, the Canadian Rainbow Health Coalition, Dr. Morrison’s project will use a comprehensive questionnaire to ask gay men and lesbian women about their perceptions of prejudice and discrimination and how it affects their physical health and psychological well-being.
