Dr. Syed is particularly interested in a human gene known as Uev1 that appears at higher level in breast cancer and other cancer cells. Working with Dr. Xiao, she will collect evidence that Uev1 competes with a cancer-prevention protein (Mms2) for binding to another protein known as Ubc13 and directs it to find NEMO, whose activation is required for immune response and other stress responses. They propose that Uev1 plays a critical role in this process and want to design drugs against Uev1 overproduction that will target and stop these tumour-developing processes.
