Recent research from Dr. Paterson’s lab has shown that the outcome of a stroke may be worse if the patient’s protein and energy levels are low. Satoshi wants to find out whether or not treating this protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) by replacing protein and energy, or giving a drug that acts like a protein supplement will improve the outcome of a stroke. The lab is also trying to find out how diet could cause these effects in the brain. They hope to learn whether or not improving the nutritional state of patients could reduce brain injury in stroke.
