Janet Smylie
Birth weight alone is a common perinatal health indicator and one that is problematic for the First Nations population. Working toward First Nations infant health also requires an understanding of traditional, community relevant indicators. Dr. Smylie and her team will work with at least two Aboriginal communities to develop an effective perinatal health information system that is informed both by quantitative epidemiologic analysis and qualitative oral history. The goal of this participatory research process is to develop and evaluate national best practice models for Aboriginal perinatal health information systems.
