About Program

The Focus on the Future Program was intended to: 1) assist Saskatchewan researchers in demonstrating local support in their applications for strategic or programmatic health research grants at the national level; 2) encourage research in health research areas of particular relevance in Saskatchewan; and 3) support graduate student training in health-related areas. It provided supplemental funding for graduate student support to Saskatchewan university faculty who succeeded in obtaining a major national strategic, program, or group grant for health research. --- The nationally supplemented grant was required to be a strategic, program, or group grant (i.e., not a regular operating grant) in health research focusing on one of the following areas: i) health issues of particular importance to aboriginal people; ii) health issues of particular importance in rural areas, iii) informing health policy decisions; or iv) health applications of the synchrotron.

As part of an international initiative coordinated by the African NGO Equinet, this project will analyze Canadian data, and generate a preliminary evaluation of policy options that Canada could adopt to reduce the damaging effects of health professional out-migration from sub-Saharan Africa. The project involves key Canadian stakeholders and collaboration with researchers in the UK and Africa. Dr. Labonte and his colleagues are aiming to design a methodological template for incorporating international concerns about equity in health into domestic public policy.
