The overall purpose of this project is to determine the health related quality of life in Saskatchewan grain workers with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD is a common health problem in Canada, most often appearing as a combination of chronic bronchitis and emphysema. As this disease progresses, people with COPD experience a reduced quality of life due to increased shortness of breath which limits activity. COPD can restrict normal development of physical, emotional, and social aspects of a patient’s life. It is an irreversible disease and a cure is still not possible in most cases, so a major goal is to improve patients’ quality of life. Dr. Pahwa will focus on identifying factors associated with the longitudinal changes in quality of life in grain workers with COPD, and will help researchers develop effective management therapies. Conclusions will be applicable to the respiratory health not only of Saskatchewan grain workers, but grain workers across Canada.
