Physiological effects of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), different from its toxicological effects, have been reported, including relaxation of vascular tissues and modulation of functions of the central nervous system. Little is known about the role of hydrogen sulfide in the regulation of cell growth generally and the effect on vascular smooth muscle cell apoptosis specifically. Drs. Yang and Wang will test the hypothesis that hydrogen sulfide induces apoptosis of vascular smooth muscle cells, thus modulating cell proliferation and growth in the vascular wall.
