Ghrelin is a peptide hormone released from the stomach. It increases the release of growth hormone from the pituitary and promotes food intake by its action on the brain. A few studies have shown that ghrelin also promotes relaxation of blood vessels and thus lowers blood pressure. However, the mechanism underlying this action of ghrelin has not been explored. Drs. Shinde and Gopal will undertake detailed studies in different blood vessels and in the whole animal model to better understand the mechanism underlying the action of ghrelin in both normal and hypertensive rat models. This study will lead to identifying new and more effective class of antihypertensives.
