The process by which a human egg acquires the ability to develop into a viable embryo is not fully understood and remains a major obstacle in the field of assisted reproductive technologies. Drs. Mayes and Singh will develop non-invasive methods to evaluate this ability using cows whose ovarian physiology is remarkably similar to humans. The long-term goal is to develop a clinical test that will help doctors determine which eggs have a better potential to survive and develop. This test would have a direct impact in the ART field by increasing the conception chances for infertile patients and by reducing health care costs.
