Developing better vaccines against whooping cough (pertussis) in humans is the focus of this project. Whooping cough starts in the mucous membranes in infants, so it is important to create a vaccine that induces a protective immune response in the nose and throat areas. Past research has been limited by the use of animal models that were not enough like humans to be very useful. Since pigs and humans share many physiological traits, this research will use a pig model. Drs. Elahi and Gerdts are working to develop an effective aerosol or spray vaccine for infants.
